Sous la IT Chute
Friday, 13 March 2009
Today was the second day for IT Show 2009. I didn't managed to go for the first day because I was really very tired. I slept for the whole afternoon yesterday, after taking the medicine. I didn't want to get down on Saturday as it might be even more cramp on weekends. Overall the IT Show 2009 for this year would be quite organised as compared to last year IT Show 2008. There will be three IT fairs each year, if you have noticed. The products that are sold this year wasn't really new or awesome for me. Typically it was almost the same as last year. Singapore would still have a long way to go for Information Technology sector. This was the reason why I stated in the title 'Sous la IT Chute', Under IT Downfall.
Yes, everything you see there seems nice and cheap. However all these has been out for the past few years, I have been talking about laptops/notebooks and desktops. Now even some booths allow you to trade-in your old laptops for cash, according to the processor you are using. Well, at least you are looking towards environmental friendly. Since old laptops are being salvaged, and golds and coppers are extracted to make into new parts.
Why I would say it is a downfall? Mainly because of the next wave of new generation in the IT world. You no longer use mechanical parts in your PC, everything will turn to Solid State Drives. The reason for why hard disks are dropping at alarming price rate. Apple products has always been using SSD, which is why you see the price is so much higher compared to PC. Alternatively, SATA3 is coming out in the first quarter of this year. It promised to have a transfer speed of 6 Gbps.
You no longer see the monitor as blurry images as before, the new LEDs screens are coming in future. It is said to be energy-saving and producing brighter contrast images. Samsung was the first to start with this LEDs technology.
No more laptops/notebooks, you are getting into an era of net-books. Net-books are what you see as smaller-sized laptops, UMPCs, as called Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers. You can get a net-book at the price of just $400 to $700 range. Of course, this aren't heavy packed weapons. For one major reason why PC desktop prices are dropping also, was because of processor model. The new Intel Core i7 processor, released last quarter of 2008 was supposed to outsmart all other processor. Greatly this contributes to the new generation. Core i7 requires a new type motherboard and processor socket LGA1366, compared to LGA775. It is strictly using DDR3 memory modules only, without the use of ECC memory. It means greatly a drawback for gaming performance. I would say that Core i7 is meant for high-end graphics and video environments, it works with 3 Nvidia SLI cards.
Now if you could think even further. Introducing Core i7 means eliminating old parts that were actually still considered high-end in future. For example DD2 and Quad-Core Extreme processors, these are still currently used for WCG gaming. Anyway, another economic reason was actually the market. Due to economic recession, this was the best time to clear out all stock for Core Duo PCs. It is better to clear out, before you lose out. This is image that I can visualise from for the next few years in IT world.
This timing is the best buy for net-books, storage devices, monitors. No point getting a high-end PC right now, because once Core i7 and Windows 7 comes stabilised in Singapore. Then will it be the time to get into one of those high-end PCs. For those who are keen into getting one portable hard disk. I shall say the conversion ratio for them.
External HDD - 1:5
Portable HDD - 1:3
Thumb Drive - 1:4
Memory Card - 1:7
So roughly an external 1TB HDD should be $169, 320GB portable HDD for $110, 8GB thumb drive for $35.
Merci tout le monde...
